Summer is right around the corner- Join us for Summer Arts Camp at Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SAC@SCA)!
We provide a safe, engaging experience designed to build a strong relationship with arts. Here at the center, we are committed to investing in imagination and due to popular demand, we are growing our summer programming! This year, we are committed to sharing the arts with as many students as we can!

Snapshot of a day with SAC@SCA (Summer Arts Camp @ Sebastopol Center for the Arts):
We start our day with a 2 ½ hour morning session with a mid-session break for playtime and fresh air in the student center on the patio. We will be working with our first teaching artist during this time in our main room. Then we enjoy our own sack lunches at Ives Park and are given time to play, make friends, and have fun (1hr). We will then dive into our second session of 2 ½ hours in the afternoon with a new teaching artist in our afternoon classroom with an additional mid-session break to unwind and relax at the student center. At the end of our week, we will have many stories to share, performances to present and art pieces to add to our growing portfolio!

Age 7-10: Session 1, 2, & 3

This 3 week camp for students age 7-10 is designed to expose young artists to as many fine art mediums as possible to allow students a safe and supportive environment to explore their creativity and passion. Students are joined by fellow classmates in their age category to explore this artists terrain with professional artists committed to cultivating creativity. Each student will develop their skills in 2 different artist styles each week and come away with a deeper understanding of the creative process and a world of creative possibilities. To ensure the full experience, students are encouraged to register for all three weeks (with limited availability for single week registration) from July 9-27.

Session 1: July 9-13

- Join prolific finger painter and experienced director Therese LaLonde in exploring art making that promotes ingenuity, originality and creative problem solving, all the while investigating the power and importance of process. Projects will encourage campers to experiment and tap into their imagination as they explore a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, sculpting and printmaking. Young artists will be encouraged to experiment with an assortment of materials to build their skills and confidence as a creator, problem solver and creative thinker.

- Join community muralist and Sebastopol born artist Dana Vallarino in a breathtaking adventure exploring the process of mural making by working together in an inclusive and creative project. Students will practice painting techniques and learn how to enlarge artwork to be shared. The class will cover diverse approaches to community art, art history, and insight into the diverse medium of murals. Students will come away with a truly special understanding of the collaborative nature of art and participate in creating a unique mural.

Session 2: July 16-20

- Join lifelong sculpture and Head Start Instructor Charlie Churchill for an introduction to modern abstract art and additive sculpture, also known as assemblage or constructionism. This hands on work emphasizes balance, tension and texture allowing students to work with pine, guitar building materials and exotic woods of many colors. Experiment with mineral oiling and learn the natural palette of colors wood has and have an opportunity to build something new and exciting! Students will leave feeling satisfaction, pride, confidence and delight in the assemblage of a wonderful wood sculpture.

-Join Indian dance specialist, fashion designer, and yoga instructor K.D. McComb on a week long exploration of cultural storytelling, costuming and traditional Indian folk dance including classical and Bollywood rhythm-based movement. We'll dive into yoga posture training to expand our understanding of balance, posture and form. Using simple steps and formations, students use interactive exercise, expression, dancing and clapping together in a fun filled, exuberant cardiovascular routine.

Session 3: July 23-27

- Join accomplished world music percussionist and recording artist Sahar Pinkham for an exploration of the fundamentals of rhythm, tempo, improvisation, and ensemble drumming. Each of these areas can be applied to their daily lives. In learning about rhythm, students deepen their sense of musical intuition, strengthen their capacity to clearly identifying personal boundaries and explore artistic expression. Expanding on improvisation encourages students to creatively engage and express themselves.

-Join inspiring art educator and clinician Sandra Novia in a fun filled class exploring drawing techniques and abstraction. Students will pick a favorite object and use contour drawing techniques to create a still life composition and then have a look at color theory. Our young artists will then be guided through the process of deconstructing those images to create an abstract piece sparkled with metallic colors and individual flare.

Age 11-14: Session 4 & 5

This 2 week camp for students age 11-14 is designed to expose young artists to as many fine art mediums as possible to allow students a safe and supportive environment to explore their creativity and passion. Together we will explore how to use abstraction as a tool for both skill building and expression. Beginning with an introduction to various techniques for using drafting tools like compass and rulers to produce patterns and geometries, followed by an introduction to color theory and an exploration of watercolor painting. As we wrap up, students will combine their new skills to create an abstract work of art.

Through exploring the history of Israeli sculptor/artist, Yaacov Agam (1928-present), students gain a deeper understanding of optical and kinetic art. Focused art instruction begins by draw two separate realistic images and through artistic manipulation, original works travel through zigzagged “mountains” and “valleys”, assembling a “kinetic” piece of moving art.
